Volkswagen Atlas
None of them, and there is no hybrid Atlas either. Every current Atlas uses one engine: a 2.0L TSI turbocharged four-cylinder making 269 hp and 273 lb-ft. The 3.6L VR6 was discontinued after the 2023 model year.
Before that disappoints you: the four-cylinder makes more torque than the V6 it replaced, and it tows the same 5,000 lbs when properly equipped, which the old Atlas needed the V6 to do. Sport Durst Volkswagen of Goldsboro, 3501 McLain Street.
Engine by Trim
Every Volkswagen Atlas Trim Runs the Same Engine
There is no engine upgrade to shop for on the current Atlas. The powertrain is identical across the whole lineup, which makes the trim decision purely about equipment, wheels, drivetrain and interior rather than about performance.
| Trim | Engine | V6 available | Hybrid available |
|---|---|---|---|
| SE | 2.0L TSI turbo four-cylinder | No | No |
| SE with Technology | 2.0L TSI turbo four-cylinder | No | No |
| Peak Edition | 2.0L TSI turbo four-cylinder | No | No |
| SEL | 2.0L TSI turbo four-cylinder | No | No |
| SEL Premium R-Line | 2.0L TSI turbo four-cylinder | No | No |
All five trims: 2.0L TSI turbocharged four-cylinder, 269 hp at 5,500 rpm and 273 lb-ft from about 1,600 rpm, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. What changes between trims is drivetrain, equipment and wheels.
Back to topWhat Happened to the VR6
The Engine You Are Remembering Ended After 2023
The Atlas launched in 2018 with a 3.6-litre VR6 on the options list, and it built a following. Volkswagen dropped it as part of the mid-cycle refresh that arrived for the 2024 model year, and has since ended VR6 production entirely. So the question is settled rather than pending.
Here is the part that usually changes people's minds. The VR6 made 276 hp and 266 lb-ft. The turbocharged four makes 269 hp and 273 lb-ft. That is seven horsepower down and seven pound-feet up, and the torque now arrives from around 1,600 rpm instead of needing to be revved for.
In the driving most Atlas owners actually do, pulling away from a light on Berkeley Boulevard or merging onto US-70, low-end torque matters more than peak horsepower. The four-cylinder feels stronger in that job, not weaker.

One engine, five trims. The differences are equipment and drivetrain.

Which Atlas Model Years Actually Have a V6
This is the useful version of the question for anyone looking at a pre-owned Atlas. The highlighted row is the only window in which a V6 was ever offered.
| Model years | V6 status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2018 to 2023 | 3.6L VR6 available, 276 hp / 266 lb-ft | Also offered a 2.0L turbo four on some trims |
| 2024 | VR6 discontinued | 2.0L TSI turbo only, 269 hp / 273 lb-ft, from the mid-cycle refresh |
| 2025 | No V6 | 2.0L TSI turbo only |
| 2026 | No V6 | 2.0L TSI turbo only, 269 hp / 273 lb-ft |
Important caveat: plenty of 2018 to 2023 Atlas models were built with the four-cylinder rather than the VR6, because both were on the options list in those years. The model year narrows the search. It does not guarantee the engine. Check the specific vehicle's window sticker or build sheet before you assume.

Back to topThe Hybrid Question
Is There a Hybrid Volkswagen Atlas? Not in the United States
There is no hybrid Atlas and no plug-in hybrid Atlas on sale here. The all-new 2027 Atlas that Volkswagen revealed in 2026 also launches without one; Volkswagen has said a hybrid version is planned for a later update rather than for launch.
So if a three-row hybrid is a firm requirement, the Atlas is not going to meet it in the near term, and we would rather say that plainly than let you find out in six months.
What Volkswagen does sell today is the ID.4, which is fully electric rather than a hybrid. It is a two-row, five-seat SUV, so it replaces a Tiguan rather than an Atlas. For a Goldsboro household that needs seven seats and wants to spend less on fuel, the practical answer today is a front-wheel-drive Atlas, EPA rated 20 city and 27 highway, rather than an electrified three-row from this brand.

The current Atlas: one gas engine, no hybrid variant.
The question underneath the question. Most people asking about the V6 or a hybrid are really asking one of two things: will it still pull my trailer, or will it cost me a fortune to run. The tow answer is yes, up to 5,000 lbs when properly equipped, with no V6 required. The fuel answer is 23 mpg combined with front-wheel drive, which is better than the VR6 years managed. Bring the actual question and we will answer that one instead.
Common Questions
Atlas Engine Questions, Answered
Which Volkswagen Atlas trims have a V6 engine?
None of them. There is no V6 in the current Atlas lineup at any trim level. Every Atlas, from the SE up to the SEL Premium R-Line, uses the same 2.0L TSI turbocharged four-cylinder making 269 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque.
When did the Volkswagen Atlas stop offering a V6?
After the 2023 model year. The 3.6L VR6 was dropped as part of the mid-cycle refresh that arrived for 2024, and the turbocharged four became the only engine. Volkswagen has since ended VR6 production altogether, so it is not coming back.
Is there a hybrid Volkswagen Atlas?
Not in the United States. There is no hybrid or plug-in hybrid Atlas on sale, and the all-new 2027 Atlas that Volkswagen revealed in 2026 also launches without one. Volkswagen has said a hybrid version is planned for a later update rather than for launch, so anyone shopping today should plan around the gas engine.
Is the four-cylinder Atlas slower than the old V6 one?
Barely, and it depends what you are measuring. The VR6 made 276 hp and 266 lb-ft. The turbo four makes 269 hp and 273 lb-ft. So it gives up 7 hp and gains 7 lb-ft of torque, and that torque arrives from about 1,600 rpm rather than needing revs. In normal driving the four-cylinder feels stronger off the line.
Can the four-cylinder Atlas still tow 5,000 lbs?
Yes. Volkswagen rates the Atlas at up to 5,000 lbs when it is properly equipped with the factory towing package. That used to require the VR6 on older Atlas models. It does not any more, which is the single most useful thing to know if you were holding out for a V6 in order to tow.
If I want a used Atlas with the V6, which model years should I look for?
Model years 2018 through 2023. Those are the years the 3.6L VR6 was on the options list. From 2024 onward the Atlas is turbo four-cylinder only. Note that some 2018 to 2023 Atlas models were built with the four-cylinder instead, so check the specific vehicle rather than assuming the year guarantees it.
What is the fuel economy difference between the four-cylinder and the old V6?
The current turbo four is EPA rated 20 city, 27 highway and 23 combined with front-wheel drive, and 20 / 26 / 22 with 4MOTION on the SE. The VR6 years rated lower. If fuel economy is part of why you were considering an older V6 Atlas, the newer four-cylinder is the better answer on that count.
Does Volkswagen sell any electrified SUV I can buy in Goldsboro today?
Yes, the ID.4, which is fully electric rather than a hybrid. It is a two-row, five-seat SUV, so it is not a substitute for a three-row Atlas. If you need seven seats and want to reduce fuel spend, the honest answer right now is a front-wheel-drive Atlas rather than an electrified three-row from this brand.
Is the Atlas Peak Edition a different engine?
No. The Peak Edition runs the same 2.0L TSI as every other Atlas. What it adds is 4MOTION all-wheel drive as standard, all-terrain tires, blacked-out exterior trim and orange interior stitching. It is an appearance and traction package, not a powertrain change.
Should I wait for the 2027 Atlas if I want more power?
That depends on how long you can wait and how much 13 hp matters to you. The all-new 2027 Atlas was revealed with a 2.0L turbo four making 282 hp and 258 lb-ft, so it is a little more powerful and a little less torquey than the current car. It is still not a V6 and still not a hybrid at launch. Come drive the current one and see whether the wait is worth it.
