Volkswagen Atlas
The Atlas seats seven as standard, on every trim, with a three-passenger bench in the second row. Order the available second-row captain's chairs instead and it seats six.

Seating by Trim
Seven Seats or Six: Which Atlas Trims Offer Which
Every Atlas leaves the factory as a seven-seater unless you ask for something else. The only trim that cannot be changed is the base SE, which is bench-only. Highlighted rows are the trims where you get to choose.
| Trim | Standard second row | Captain's chairs | Total seats |
|---|---|---|---|
| SE | 7 (second-row bench) | Not offered | 7 only |
| SE with Technology | 7 (second-row bench) | Available | 7 or 6 |
| Peak Edition | 7 (second-row bench) | Available | 7 or 6 |
| SEL | 7 (second-row bench) | Available | 7 or 6 |
| SEL Premium R-Line | 7 (second-row bench) | Available | 7 or 6 |
Second-row captain's chairs are an available option, not standard equipment, on the trims listed above. Configuration varies vehicle to vehicle, so confirm the second row of the specific Atlas you are looking at before you buy.
Back to topThe Real Decision
Seven Seats You Rarely Fill, or Six You Use Every Day
This is the question worth thinking about before you shop, because it is not really about capacity. It is about how people get into the back.
With the bench you have a seventh seat, and reaching the third row means folding and sliding part of that bench forward every time. With captain's chairs you lose the seventh seat and gain a permanent walkway between the two chairs, which a child can use on their own without anybody getting out of the car.
The test is simple. Count the number of days last year you actually carried seven people. If it was a handful, the walkway will improve more mornings than the seventh seat ever will. If you run a carpool to Wayne County schools or you have three kids who all need to be in the second row, keep the bench and stop reading.

The Third Row
Who Actually Fits Back There, Without the Sales Pitch
Every three-row SUV brochure implies seven adults. Almost none of them mean it, and the Atlas is no different, so here is the useful version.
The Atlas third row is a real seat. Two people fit, it has its own belts and headrests, and it is not the fold-down jump seat some crossovers call a third row. For school runs, youth sports and a trip across Goldsboro it works without complaint.
For a three-hour drive to Wrightsville Beach, put teenagers back there rather than adults, and put the adults in the second row. That is not an Atlas limitation so much as a midsize-SUV limitation, and any salesperson who tells you otherwise has not sat in one for three hours.
We have deliberately not printed row-by-row legroom numbers on this page. Volkswagen does not publish them for the 2026 Atlas in a form we can cite, and the third-party spec sheets disagree with each other. Sit in the actual third row for two minutes instead. It answers the question better than a number would.

Seats Up, Cargo Behind
The Number Most Three-Row Shoppers Forget to Ask About
Seating capacity is the question people ask. Cargo space behind the last occupied row is the question that decides whether the vehicle works, and it is the one that catches families out on the first road trip.
With all seven seats up, the Atlas keeps 20.6 cu ft behind the third row. That is a genuine trunk, deep enough for a week of groceries or several medium suitcases, not the six-inch parcel shelf some three-row crossovers leave you.
Fold the third row and you have 55.5 cu ft. Fold both back rows and it opens to 96.6 cu ft. The Atlas also tows up to 5,000 lbs when properly equipped with the factory towing package, which covers a small boat headed for the Neuse.
If you know you will never use the third row, the Atlas Cross Sport is the same vehicle with two rows and more room behind them. If five seats is plenty, the Tiguan costs less to run.

96.6 cu ft with both back rows folded down.
The Rest of the Lineup
Seat Counts Across the Volkswagen Range
Worth knowing before you assume a smaller Volkswagen will do the same job. Only one model in the current lineup has a third row.
Atlas
Seven seats, or six
The only three-row Volkswagen. Seven standard with the bench, six with the available captain's chairs. 20.6 cu ft behind the third row.

Five seats
The two-row Atlas. Same 2.0L turbo, same 5,000-lb tow rating when properly equipped, third row traded for cargo room behind the second.

Five seats
Two rows only. The optional third row ran through the 2024 model year and did not carry over into the redesign, so a used 2024 is the last seven-seat Tiguan.

Volkswagen Atlas Seating Questions, Answered
How many seats does the Volkswagen Atlas have?
Seven, as standard, across every trim. The Atlas is a three-row SUV with two front seats, a three-passenger bench in the second row and a two-passenger third row. If you order the available second-row captain's chairs instead of the bench, the total becomes six.
Can you get a Volkswagen Atlas with six seats?
Yes. Second-row captain's chairs replace the three-passenger bench with two individual seats, which takes the Atlas from seven seats to six. They are available on the SE with Technology and every trim above it. The base SE comes with the bench only.
Should I choose the seven-seat bench or the six-seat captain's chairs?
Count how often you genuinely carry seven people. If the answer is a few times a year, the captain's chairs are usually the better daily car, because the gap between them gives you a walkway to the third row instead of a folding seat to wrestle. If you run a carpool or have three kids in the second row, keep the bench and the seventh seat.
Does the Atlas third row fit adults?
For a short trip, yes. For a drive to the coast, plan on teenagers rather than adults. The third row in a midsize three-row SUV is a real seat rather than a token one, but it is still the smallest seat in the vehicle, and that is true of every SUV in this class.
How much cargo room is left with all seven seats up?
20.6 cu ft behind the third row, which is a genuine trunk rather than a parcel shelf. Fold the third row and it opens to 55.5 cu ft. Fold both back rows and you have 96.6 cu ft.
Can I fit three car seats across the Atlas second row?
It depends entirely on the seats you own, not on the Atlas. Car seat widths vary enormously and so do the bases. The only honest way to answer it is to bring your actual seats to the dealership and try them in the actual vehicle, which takes about ten minutes and settles it for good.
Does the third row fold flat?
Yes. Both back rows fold down to open the full 96.6 cu ft load area, and the second row also slides and tilts to let people into the third row.
Is the Volkswagen Tiguan a seven-seater too?
No. The current Tiguan is a five-seat, two-row SUV. Third-row seating was dropped when the Tiguan was redesigned, so a used Tiguan from 2024 or earlier is the last one that offered it. If you need three rows from Volkswagen today, the Atlas is the answer.
How many seats does the Atlas Cross Sport have?
Five. The Atlas Cross Sport is the two-row version of the Atlas, built on the same platform with the third row traded for cargo space behind the second. Same engine, same tow rating, two fewer seats.
Can I see a seven-seat and a six-seat Atlas side by side in Goldsboro?
Depending on what is on the lot that week, often yes. Call (919) 351-6684 before you drive over and we will tell you which second-row configurations are actually here, and hold them for you if both are.
