Volkswagen Atlas

Does the Volkswagen Atlas Come in AWD?

Yes. Volkswagen calls its all-wheel-drive system 4MOTION, and every Atlas trim can have it. It is standard on the Peak Edition, SEL and SEL Premium R-Line, and available on the SE and SE with Technology, which are front-wheel drive as they sit.

The Answer, Trim by Trim

Volkswagen Atlas 4MOTION Availability by Trim

The 2026 Atlas lineup runs five trims. Two start front-wheel drive, three come with all-wheel drive whether you want it or not. Highlighted rows are the trims where 4MOTION is standard equipment.

EPA ratings from fueleconomy.gov, checked September 2026. Front-wheel drive Atlas models are rated 20 city, 27 highway and 23 combined. Note that fueleconomy.gov publishes four Atlas entries rather than one per trim, so the SEL Premium R-Line shares the SEL 4MOTION rating rather than carrying its own test. Your real-world number will differ from any of these.

What You Are Actually Buying

4MOTION Is All-Wheel Drive, Not Four-Wheel Drive

The two get used as if they mean the same thing. They do not. Four-wheel drive normally means a transfer case, a low range and a truck platform underneath. It is built for rocks, ruts and getting unstuck.

4MOTION is an all-wheel-drive system. It runs the Atlas through the front wheels most of the time, then sends torque rearward the moment the fronts start to lose grip. You do not switch it on and there is no lever to pull. It works on wet asphalt, loose gravel and a slick boat ramp, and it is not intended for a trail.

That is the right system for the way an Atlas is actually used. Nobody buys a seven-seat family SUV to go rock crawling in it.

Do You Need It Here?

Four Reasons a Goldsboro Driver Buys 4MOTION, and One Reason That Is a Myth

We would rather sell you the right Atlas than the more expensive one. Eastern North Carolina is not a snow market, so the honest case for all-wheel drive around here is built on water and soft ground rather than ice.

  1. Wet clay and soft shoulders. Wayne County back roads drain slowly. Pulling off onto a soft shoulder after a hard rain is where a front-wheel-drive SUV spins and an all-wheel-drive one just goes.
  2. Boat ramps. A wet, algae-slick concrete ramp on the Neuse is the single most convincing 4MOTION demonstration available in this county, and it happens with a trailer already attached.
  3. Farm and hunting access. Field lanes, timber roads and gravel tracks are not off-roading, but they are exactly the low-grip surfaces all-wheel drive is built for.
  4. Getting a loaded trailer moving. Not the towing itself, the first twenty feet. Starting a loaded trailer on wet grass or a gravel pad is a traction problem before it is a power problem.

The myth: you need all-wheel drive to reach the Atlas towing number. You do not. Volkswagen rates the Atlas at up to 5,000 lbs when properly equipped with the factory towing package, and that rating is the same on front-wheel drive and on 4MOTION. If towing capacity is your only reason for wanting all-wheel drive, you can put the money somewhere it does more for you.

The Trade-off

What 4MOTION Costs You Between Goldsboro and Raleigh

An Atlas with front-wheel drive is EPA rated 23 mpg combined. An SE with 4MOTION is rated 22. That is a one-mile-per-gallon difference for the drivetrain, which is smaller than most buyers assume when they walk in.

The bigger drop shows up on the Peak Edition and the SEL, both rated 21 combined. That extra loss is not the all-wheel drive doing it. It is the larger wheels, the all-terrain tires on the Peak Edition and the added weight of the equipment those trims carry.

So the fair way to frame the decision is this: choosing 4MOTION over front-wheel drive costs you roughly a mile per gallon. Choosing a higher trim costs you another one or two. Those are two separate decisions and it helps to make them separately.

If fuel economy is the priority in your household, the Tiguan and the Jetta both rate higher than any Atlas, and both are worth driving before you commit to three rows.

Common Questions

Volkswagen Atlas All-Wheel-Drive Questions

Does the Volkswagen Atlas come in AWD?

Yes. Volkswagen's all-wheel-drive system is called 4MOTION, and it is available on every Atlas trim. On the Peak Edition, SEL and SEL Premium R-Line it is standard equipment. On the SE and the SE with Technology the Atlas is front-wheel drive as it sits, and 4MOTION is the upgrade you add.

Which Atlas trims come with 4MOTION as standard?

Three of them: the Peak Edition, the SEL and the SEL Premium R-Line. You cannot order those three in front-wheel drive. The two lower trims, SE and SE with Technology, start as front-wheel drive with 4MOTION available.

Is 4MOTION the same thing as four-wheel drive?

No, and the difference matters. Four-wheel drive usually means a transfer case, a low range and a truck underneath it. 4MOTION on the Atlas is an all-wheel-drive system built for traction on a road surface, sending power to the rear wheels when the fronts start to slip. It is the right tool for a wet road and the wrong tool for rock crawling.

How much fuel economy does 4MOTION cost on the Atlas?

Less than most people expect. A front-wheel-drive Atlas is EPA rated 20 city, 27 highway and 23 combined. The SE 4MOTION is 20, 26 and 22. The Peak Edition and SEL with 4MOTION are 19, 25 and 21. So the drivetrain itself costs about one mile per gallon, and the rest of the gap on the upper trims comes from bigger wheels and more weight.

Do I actually need all-wheel drive in Wayne County?

Honestly, most Goldsboro drivers do not need it for snow. Eastern North Carolina gets a handful of frozen mornings a year and the state clears US-70 and US-117 quickly. The real cases here are different: wet clay after a hard rain, a soft shoulder on a county road, a boat ramp on the Neuse, and pulling a loaded trailer off wet grass.

Does the Atlas tow more with 4MOTION than with front-wheel drive?

No. Volkswagen rates the Atlas at up to 5,000 lbs when it is properly equipped with the factory towing package, and that figure is the same on front-wheel drive and on 4MOTION. What all-wheel drive changes is how confidently you get a loaded trailer moving on a surface that is not dry pavement.

Is the Atlas Peak Edition an off-road model?

It is the most capable-looking Atlas rather than an off-road build. The Peak Edition adds all-terrain tires, blacked-out exterior trim and orange interior stitching on top of standard 4MOTION. That combination is genuinely useful on a gravel farm lane. It does not turn the Atlas into a trail vehicle, and we would rather tell you that now.

Can I add 4MOTION to an Atlas after I buy it?

No. All-wheel drive is built into the vehicle at the factory, so it has to be ordered or bought that way. This is the one decision on the Atlas that you genuinely cannot change your mind about later, which is why it is worth ten minutes of thought before you sign.
