Third-generation specifications are for the current model. Verify equipment on any specific used car before you buy.
The generation split matters more than the model year on its own. A 2017 Tiguan and a 2018 Tiguan share a name and almost nothing else. The 2018 car is roughly 10 inches longer, rides on a different platform, and has a different transmission.

The IQ.DRIVE driver assistance suite, which bundles adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane keeping assist and emergency assist, became standard on every trim above the base S and stayed optional on the S.
That last one is the real reason to prefer a 2022 or newer car. Adaptive cruise on US 70 between Goldsboro and Raleigh is a different commute than plain cruise control.
The platform had four years behind it
The second-generation Tiguan went on sale as a 2018 model. By 2022 it had been through four full production years. Later builds of any generation tend to be the sorted ones, and the Tiguan is no exception.
Some factory coverage may still be left
Volkswagen covered 2018 and 2019 cars with a 6-year, 72,000-mile transferable bumper-to-bumper warranty. Starting with the 2020 model year, that changed to 4 years and 50,000 miles, with two years of scheduled maintenance included. - Work every button on the climate controlOn 2022 and newer cars the climate interface uses touch sliders instead of knobs. Some people get on with them immediately and some never do. Ten minutes in the driver's seat settles the question better than any review.
- Drive it at two speedsGet it out on US 70 at highway pace, then bring it back through a parking lot at walking speed. The 8-speed automatic should shift smoothly under both loads, with no shudder from a stop and no hunting between gears on a light throttle.

Why Maintenance Records Matter More on a Turbocharged VW
Every Tiguan sold here has a turbocharged engine. That is not a warning, it is a maintenance profile.
A turbo runs hotter than a naturally aspirated engine and asks more of its oil. Oil that stays in too long stops protecting the turbo bearings first. So the single most valuable piece of paper attached to a used Tiguan is a record of oil changes at sensible intervals with the correct specification oil.
The Tiguan's 2.0-liter engine is also direct injected, which means fuel sprays straight into the cylinder rather than washing over the intake valves on the way in. Over tens of thousands of miles that lets carbon deposits build on the valves. This is true of nearly every modern direct-injection turbo engine on the market, not a VW trait, and it is a service item rather than a failure. An intake cleaning is a routine job. Ask whether it has been done, and at what mileage.
One more thing that saves people money: the Tiguan does not use a DSG dual-clutch transmission. Both the second-generation and the current cars use a conventional 8-speed torque-converter automatic. If a seller quotes you DSG service costs on a Tiguan, they are quoting the wrong car.
