The Goldsboro end of this route got a lot better in 2016, when NCDOT opened the 20-mile US-70 Goldsboro Bypass. It runs from western Wayne County out to near La Grange in Lenoir County, and it took the traffic lights out of the middle of the trip. In September 2024 NCDOT started re-signing that bypass as Interstate 42, part of the long-running project to turn the US-70 corridor into an interstate from Raleigh to Morehead City. Practically, that means the Kinston side of your commute is still surface highway with signals, and the Goldsboro side is freeway. One car has to be good at both.

Keep going west past Goldsboro and US-70 carries you through Johnston County toward I-40 and Raleigh, which is why a lot of eastern NC households treat this road as their on-ramp to everything. A car bought for the Kinston commute ends up doing the Raleigh trip too.

The 2026 Tiguan S with front-wheel drive is rated by the EPA at 26 mpg city, 34 mpg highway and 29 mpg combined. That highway number is the whole argument.
