One honest note on how to read this table. The EPA publishes four Tiguan entries for 2026, not seven: the S in front-wheel drive, the rest of the front-wheel-drive lineup, a single 4MOTION rating for the 201-horsepower trims, and a separate 4MOTION rating for the SEL R-Line Turbo. The table maps those four published ratings onto the four trims. It is not seven separate EPA tests.
The S separating from the SE by 1 city and 2 highway MPG is not a different engine. It is almost certainly the wheels. The S rides on the smallest wheel and tire package in the lineup, while the SE R-Line Black moves up to 20-inch wheels. Bigger wheels mean more rotating mass and more rolling resistance, and the test cycle notices.

Wayne County is close to the ideal test bed for a rating like this. The coastal plain is flat, US-70 west of town runs at a steady speed with few stops, and the Raleigh trip is long enough that the engine spends almost all of it warm. That is the driving that produces highway numbers.
Run the Raleigh trip and back and you have covered about 104 miles. A front-wheel-drive Tiguan S at its 34 MPG highway rating burns roughly three gallons doing it. The same round trip in a 4MOTION Tiguan at 30 highway burns closer to three and a half.
The Seymour Johnson Air Force Base commute is the opposite case, and it is the one that catches people out. A drive of a few miles from a neighborhood off Berkeley Boulevard to the base gate never gets the engine to full operating temperature. That trip lives entirely in the city rating, and often below it. If most of your week is base, school, and a grocery run, plan around 22 to 26 MPG rather than the combined figure.
Two errands, two very different numbers
The 29-mile run east to Kinston on US-70 and the 26-mile run north to Wilson on US-117 and I-795 are both long enough to average close to the highway rating. A Saturday of short hops between Ash Street, the Berkeley Boulevard shopping strip, and back home is not.
Same vehicle, same tank, and the difference between those two weeks can be 6 or 7 MPG. Nothing is wrong with the car. Trip length is simply the single biggest variable in real-world fuel economy.
The Drivetrain Question

The 268-horsepower trim barely costs you anything. The SEL R-Line Turbo rates 22 city, 29 highway and 25 combined. Against any other 4MOTION Tiguan that is identical in the city, identical combined, and one MPG down on the highway, while carrying 67 more horsepower. There is no front-wheel-drive SEL R-Line Turbo, so the trim's real fuel cost is the 4MOTION requirement, not the engine.

How Far a 2026 Tiguan Goes on One Tank, and Which Pump to Use
Regular unleaded, in every trim. The EPA lists regular gasoline as the fuel type for all four published 2026 Tiguan variants, and that includes the 268-horsepower SEL R-Line Turbo. A turbocharged engine does not automatically mean a premium pump. Always defer to the label inside the fuel filler door and the owner manual for your specific vehicle.
The tank, and an honest flag on it
Volkswagen's own 2026 Tiguan press materials do not publish a tank figure, and the third-party spec sheets disagree. One lists about 15.6 gallons across the lineup. Another lists a smaller tank for front-wheel-drive models. We are using 15.6 gallons here and marking it [CONFIRM], because the honest answer is that it needs checking against the window sticker or the owner manual before anyone plans a trip around it.

Range figures are the EPA rating multiplied by an unconfirmed 15.6-gallon tank. They are ceilings, not promises. Nobody drives a tank to zero, so subtract the last gallon or two and treat the usable number as 40 or 50 miles lower. The Raleigh round trip is counted at about 104 miles.
For most Wayne County drivers, the practical read is simple. A front-wheel-drive Tiguan will cover a working week of commuting plus a Raleigh trip on one tank. A 4MOTION Tiguan will want a stop before the second Raleigh round trip. Neither of those is a reason to pick one over the other on its own.

The gap that matters is at the ends. A front-wheel-drive Taos is 2 MPG combined better than the best Tiguan, and a front-wheel-drive Atlas is 6 MPG combined worse. Put another way, an Atlas on the Raleigh run burns roughly a gallon more than a Tiguan doing the same trip.
The Tiguan's argument against the Taos is not fuel economy, it is 33.8 cubic feet of cargo behind the rear seats and a 2.0L engine that does not have to work as hard at 70 on US-70. Its argument against the Atlas is that most Wayne County households do not need a third row. If yours does, that decision is already made, and the three-row Atlas inventory is the right place to start instead.
One thing the 2026 Tiguan cannot do: seat seven. Third-row seating was dropped when the Tiguan was redesigned, so every 2026 Tiguan is a five-seater.

Seven Things That Actually Move Your Tiguan's MPG in Wayne County

Your commute has all of those. A real-world average landing 10 to 15 percent under the combined rating is normal across the whole industry, not a Volkswagen trait.
The five things pulling hardest on the number here:
Cold starts. An engine burns the most fuel in its first few minutes. A short base commute may never leave that window.
Air conditioning. A Wayne County July is a real load on the engine, and the EPA city cycle does not model running the A/C hard for months.
Ethanol. Most pump gas here is blended with up to 10 percent ethanol, which carries less energy per gallon than pure gasoline. That alone is worth a few percent.
