Volkswagen SUV Comparison
Two Volkswagen SUVs, one real question: do you need a third row or not? Answer that and the rest of this comparison mostly answers itself.
Both are on the lot at Sport Durst Volkswagen of Goldsboro, so this page has no side to take. It has the numbers, and an honest read on which one suits which kind of Wayne County driver.
Why These Two
The Cross-Shop That Happens in Our Showroom Almost Every Week
The Atlas and the Tiguan are the two Volkswagen SUVs most Goldsboro buyers put against each other, and they are separated by one structural decision rather than a list of features. The Atlas has three rows and seats seven. The Tiguan has two rows and seats five.
Everything downstream of that follows: the Atlas is bigger, more powerful and tows five times as much, and the Tiguan is significantly cheaper to fuel and easier to park. Neither is the better vehicle. One of them is the better vehicle for you, and it usually takes about ten minutes of honest arithmetic about your own week to work out which.
Head to Head
2026 Atlas and 2026 Tiguan, Line by Line
The chip marks whichever vehicle genuinely wins that row. Both of them win rows, because both of them are ours and there is nothing to gain from pretending otherwise.
EPA figures from fueleconomy.gov, checked September 2026. Note that fueleconomy.gov publishes four entries per model rather than one per trim, so the rows above map EPA entries onto the trim lineup rather than reporting per-trim testing. On towing: the Atlas figure of 5,000 lbs is Volkswagen's own published rating for a properly equipped vehicle. For the Tiguan, published tow ratings from third-party sources disagree with each other and Volkswagen does not publish one on its model page, so we will not print a number here. Treat the Tiguan as a light-towing vehicle and check the owner's manual for the specific vehicle before you hitch anything to it.
Four Straight Answers
Where Each One Genuinely Wins
Seven seats standard, or six with the available second-row captain's chairs on SE with Technology and above. There is no configuration of the Tiguan that carries more than five, because the third row was dropped when it was redesigned. If your household regularly moves six people, the comparison ends here and the Atlas is your vehicle.
A front-wheel-drive Tiguan S is EPA rated 26 city and 34 highway. A front-wheel-drive Atlas is 20 and 27. With all-wheel drive the gap holds: 22 and 30 for the Tiguan against 20 and 26 for an SE 4MOTION Atlas, or 19 and 25 on the Peak Edition and SEL. For a Kinston or Wilson driver putting real miles on US-70 every week, that is a difference you feel every month rather than once.
269 hp and 273 lb-ft against 201 hp and 207 lb-ft on most Tiguans, and up to 5,000 lbs of towing when properly equipped with the factory towing package. If there is a boat, a camper or a utility trailer in your life, this row settles it. Fold both back rows and the Atlas opens to 96.6 cu ft, against 69.8 in the Tiguan.
This is the one that surprises people. With every seat in use, the Tiguan holds 33.8 cu ft behind its second row and the Atlas holds 20.6 cu ft behind its third. So on the normal day, with the family aboard, the smaller SUV has the bigger boot. The Atlas only pulls ahead once you start folding seats down, which most households do a few times a year rather than a few times a week.
Which Driver Are You
Two Vehicles, Two Different Wayne County Buyers

2026 Volkswagen Atlas
Buy it if
You move more than five people on a regular week. You tow something. You take road trips with luggage for everybody and would rather not put a box on the roof. Or you have a third child arriving and are doing the arithmetic early.

2026 Volkswagen Tiguan
Buy it if
Your household is four or five people. Your commute is long enough that fuel is a monthly line item. You want the tall seating position and the big hatch without paying to move an empty third row around Goldsboro all year.

Both Cargo Answers Are Correct, Which Is Why This Gets Argued About
On a normal day, the Tiguan carries more
Compare like with like: the space behind the last row you are actually using. The Tiguan gives you 33.8 cu ft behind its second row. The Atlas gives you 20.6 cu ft behind its third. With every seat occupied, the smaller SUV wins by a wide margin.
Fold the Tiguan's rear seats and you get 69.8 cu ft on a nearly flat floor, which covers most of what a household of four throws at it.

Tiguan: 33.8 cu ft behind the rear seats, 69.8 cu ft folded.
Once you start folding seats, the Atlas runs away with it
Drop the Atlas third row and you have 55.5 cu ft, already most of the way to the Tiguan's maximum. Drop both back rows and it opens to 96.6 cu ft, which is roughly forty percent more than the Tiguan can offer at its biggest.
So the honest framing is this: the Tiguan is the better everyday hauler and the Atlas is the better occasional one. Buy for the week you actually have, not the weekend you imagine.

Atlas: 20.6 cu ft behind row three, 96.6 cu ft with both rows down.
Technology and Safety
The Smaller SUV Actually Has the Bigger Screen
This is the section where the size logic breaks down. The Tiguan carries a 12.9-inch touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital cockpit as standard on every trim. The Atlas carries a 12-inch touchscreen on every trim, and reserves the 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro for SE with Technology and above.
Where they are level is the part that matters most on US-70: IQ.DRIVE is standard on every trim of both vehicles. That means adaptive cruise control, Travel Assist lane centering, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert, on the base car, without an option box.
One thing worth naming, because R-Line badging causes confusion: on the Tiguan, R-Line is a styling package rather than a performance upgrade. The single exception is the SEL R-Line Turbo, where the engine genuinely changes to 268 hp and 258 lb-ft. Every other R-Line Tiguan drives like the trim beneath it and looks sharper doing it.

The Atlas 12-inch touchscreen, standard on every trim.
Inside the Tiguan
The redesigned Tiguan cabin is the newer of the two designs, and it shows in the screen size and in how much of the equipment is standard rather than optional. If a long commute means you spend more time looking at the dashboard than at the third row, that is worth weighing.

Common Questions
Atlas vs Tiguan Questions, Answered
What is the main difference between the Volkswagen Atlas and the Tiguan?
Rows. The Atlas is a three-row midsize SUV that seats seven, and the Tiguan is a two-row compact SUV that seats five. Everything else that separates them, the size, the fuel economy, the towing rating and the price of running one, follows from that single difference.
Which one is better for a Goldsboro family?
It depends on how many people you carry on a normal Tuesday, not on a holiday. Families who regularly move more than five people should be in the Atlas. Families of four who occasionally need a sixth seat are usually better served by a Tiguan and a bigger fuel budget left over.
Does the Volkswagen Tiguan have a third row?
Not any more. The optional third row ran through the 2024 model year and was dropped when the Tiguan was redesigned. Today's Tiguan is a five-seat, two-row SUV. If you want three rows from Volkswagen, the Atlas is the only current answer.
Which is better on fuel, the Atlas or the Tiguan?
The Tiguan, by a wide margin. A front-wheel-drive Tiguan S is EPA rated 26 city and 34 highway, against 20 city and 27 highway for a front-wheel-drive Atlas. On a daily commute from Kinston or Wilson into Goldsboro that difference adds up over a year.
Which one tows more?
The Atlas, and it is not close. Volkswagen rates the Atlas at up to 5,000 lbs when properly equipped with the factory towing package. The Tiguan is rated for light towing only. If you pull a boat to the Neuse or a utility trailer, the Atlas is the vehicle.
Is the Atlas more powerful than the Tiguan?
On most trims, yes. The Atlas makes 269 hp and 273 lb-ft from its 2.0L turbo. Most Tiguans make 201 hp and 207 lb-ft. The exception is the Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo, which uses a higher-output version of the same engine family at 268 hp and 258 lb-ft in a much lighter vehicle.
Do both come with all-wheel drive?
Both offer Volkswagen 4MOTION all-wheel drive. On the Atlas it is standard on the Peak Edition, SEL and SEL Premium R-Line and available on the two SE trims. On the Tiguan it is available on every trim and standard on the SEL R-Line Turbo.
Which has more cargo space?
Both answers are correct, which is why this trips people up. With every seat in use the Tiguan wins: 33.8 cu ft behind its second row against 20.6 cu ft behind the Atlas third row. With all rear seats folded the Atlas wins: 96.6 cu ft against 69.8. Decide based on how you usually drive, not how you occasionally move furniture.
Which has the better technology?
They are closer than the size gap suggests. The Tiguan actually has the larger screen at 12.9 inches to the Atlas's 12, and its 10.25-inch digital cockpit is standard on every trim while the Atlas reserves the Digital Cockpit Pro for SE with Technology and above. IQ.DRIVE driver assistance is standard on both.
